Consultancy Derived
Windows Vista Courses
Our system consultants have been monitoring the
overhaul of the Windows operating system – failures and successes for the five
past years. Originally code-named Longhorn and renamed Vista, several
initiatives failed to materialize and the result is more of an evolutionary
shift, focusing on visual modernization and ease of use. We have been examining
the issues associated with Release Candidate 2. Given the
operational requirements of our client base for implementing programmatic web
content in hybrid environments, we have been generating our own benchmarks and
comparing open source UNIX variants with Microsoft operating systems.
Key Personnel
SYS-ED’s five core Windows Vista courses are:
In addition to explaining and demonstrating the
new features, each SYS-ED Windows Vista course will provide an analysis:
 |
As to which features provide legitimate
value and address shortcomings from previous versions of Windows. |
 |
Changes to the operating system which are
related more directly to visual appearance rather than improvements in
productivity. |
 |
Featureset claims by Microsoft which have
minimal practical value and what does not work as advertised. |
The bottom line: "Not all Windows Vista Training is the
same."

Microsoft Stated Featureset
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Explorers |
Instant Search is available in
any Explorer window. |
| Windows Aero |
Graphical user interface and
visual style in Windows Vista which includes transparencies and
animations. |

Thumbnails |
Displays whether the window is
minimized or not, and whether the content of the window is a document,
photo, or a running video or process. |
Windows Flip
and
Flip 3D |
Provides a view for
navigating through open windows. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Desktop Search |
An integrated desktop
search capability for locating a file, word, phrase, or property of the
object. |
| Search Folders |
Is a search that has been
saved; opening a Search Folder runs a saved search. |
| Windows Sidebar |
Pane on
the side of the Windows Vista desktop that organizes gadgets. |
| Gadgets |
Mini applications. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Remote Assistance |
A stand-alone application, as
compared to previous versions. It has been optimized to use less network
bandwidth. |
| Windows Update |
Automatically provides software
updates. Settings can be customized as to when those updates occur. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Network Center |
Provides information on where
the computer is connected to and verifies whether Internet access is
available. |
| Network Setup |
A wizard is used for setting
up wired or wireless network and for identifying unconfigured network
devices and adding them to the network. It also automates the process of
adding new devices to a network. Network settings can be saved to a
portable USB flash drive. |
| Network Explorer |
Presents a view of all PCs,
devices, and printers on the network. It is used for sharing files and
managing resources on a network. It can also directly interact with devices
for adjusting settings. |
| Network Map |
Provides a graphical view of
wireless and wired connections: computers, devices, and network settings. It
can be used in conjunction with Network Diagnostics. |
| Wireless Networking |
There no longer is the
requirement to manually tune TCP/IP settings. Vista detects network
conditions and automatically optimizes performance. The TCP Receive Window
is dynamically increased/decreased in order to utilize
the capacity of a connection. |
| Network Awareness |
Provides the ability to report
changes in network connectivity to applications. When connected to different
networks, the change is communicated to Network Awareness-supported
applications. This feature makes applications aware and optimized for the
network's changing capabilities. |
| Network Diagnostics |
Provides analysis to network
connection failures and presents solutions or a list of possible causes. |
Networking
Optimized for Speed |
There is an automatic tuning
capability which makes an adjustment to receive more data at any given
time by detecting the speed of the Internet connection and the amount of
bandwidth available. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Speech Recognition |
Is integrated into Windows
Vista and supports multiple languages. Text can be dictated into documents,
e-mail messages, etc. |
| Windows SideShow |
Enables laptop manufacturers to
include a secondary or auxiliary display in future laptop designs. It will also provide the capability for hardware
manufacturers to build auxiliary displays in peripheral devices such as
keyboards, LCD display casings, remote controls, and cell phones. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Interface |
There is tabbed browsing,
inline search, and shrink-to-fit printing. |
| Security |
There is new security and privacy
features. |
| RSS |
Built in support for RSS:
Really Simple Syndication; which provides the capability to browse new
information from various sites without having to visit each site separately. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
Backup and
Restore
Center |
Recovery is allowed from a
greater range of changes. When a restore point is requested, a shadow copy
of a file or folder is created. Restore points can be requested
automatically or specified. When the system needs to be restored,
files and settings are copied from the shadow copy to the live volume used
by Windows Vista. |
| System Restore |
Provides for the rolling back
of system files, registry keys, installed programs, etc., to a previous
state in the event of a failure. |
| Windows Backup |
There are more choices
for storing backed-up information: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, an external hard disk
connected by USB or IEEE 1394, another hard disk on the PC, or to another PC
or server connected to the network. There is a Wizard to schedule when and
where data should be backed up to. |
| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| User Account
Control |
Provides the capability to
decide if certain potentially dangerous software is allowed to make changes
to a computer. It works with Windows Defender and Internet Explorer to
reduce the impact of viruses, spyware, and other threats. |
| Malware Protection |
Layer
security features are utilized to help prevent and remove malware – worms, spyware,
unwanted pop-ups, and related issues – theft of personal information and
systems performance degradation. |
| Tools and Utilities |
The following tools and utilities are
incorporated into Vista:
- Security Alerts
- Automatic Updates and Windows Security
Center
- Windows Vista firewall
- Windows Defender
- MSRT: Malicious Software Removal Tool is
delivered through
Automatic Updates

| Feature |
Stated Functionality |
| Sleep on Desktop
PCs |
Combines the speed of Standby
with the data protection features and low power consumption of Hibernate. Resuming use
of a PC in the Sleep state can be done in a matter of seconds. |
| Sleep on Laptop PCs |
Is entered by pressing the
Power button or closing the laptop lid; data is then saved to memory. As
battery power winds down, Windows Vista quickly transitions the data to disk
to keep the data safe. |
| SuperFetch |
Manages memory to get the most
out of available RAM.
Allows applications and files to load faster and addresses uneven system responsiveness. It recognizes which
applications are most frequently used and preloads these applications into
memory. |
| ReadyBoost |
Provides the capability for
using a removable flash memory device, such as a USB thumb drive, to improve
system performance without opening the box. It works in tandem with SuperFetch. Data on the
removable memory device is encrypted to prevent inappropriate access to data
when the device is removed. |
| Windows ReadyDrive |
Utilizes hybrid hard disks with
integrated flash memory to improve battery life, performance, and
reliability. Provides the capability on a hybrid hard disk to boot up, resume from hibernate, preserve battery power, and
improve hard disk reliability. |
