z/OS Operating System - through Release 1.10

Tri-modal Addressing: 24-bit, 31-bit, and 64-bit
IBM has been phasing out support for tri-modal addressing. Up through z/OS Version 1.5, the z/OS operating system could start in either 31-bit ESA/390 or 64-bit z/Architecture mode. This allowed the operating system to function on older hardware albeit without 64-bit application support.  Only z/Architecture hardware manufactured after the year 2000 can run 64-bit code. IBM support for z/OS 1.5 ended on March 31, 2007.  In 2011, the z/OS operating system is only supported on z/Architecture mainframes and runs exclusively in 64-bit mode.

The z/Architecture hardware starts running in 31-bit mode; current z/OS releases then switch to 64-bit mode and will not run on hardware which does not support 64-bit mode. Application development can still be performed using any addressing mode.  All applications, regardless as to their addressing mode(s), can coexist without modification. IBM continues to support and maintain a significant degree of control on tri-modal backward compatibility through its WebSphere MQ middleware. However, there are third party middleware products which require 64-bit mode. The Oracle Corporation Roadmap is the major alternative to a complete implementation of IBM system software.

64-bit Memory Support
Within each address space, z/OS only supports the placement of data above the 2GB "bar," not code. This distinction is enforced primarily for performance reasons. There are no architectural impediments for allowing more than 2GB of application code per address space.

There are three types of large memory objects: Unshared, Shared, and Common. All address spaces can access the memory. The common large memory object was introduced in z/OS Release 10.

IBM now allows Java code to execute above the 2GB bar.  Memory is obtained as "Large Memory Objects" in multiples of 1MB.

IBM's mainframe information technology services are built upon commercial software which is being expanded to include cloud computing initiatives. Its foundation is to simplify, collaborate, reuse, and standardize. SYS-ED's mainframe course offerings, educational consultancy, and training programs have been designed to augment IBM's information agenda:

1- Delivery of content through multiple delivery medium as part of a collaborative environment for integrating data at a business level.

2- Student hand-outs, reference guides, and validation assessment for training human resources that leverage existing investments in software infrastructure.

3- Application development accelerators in the form of industry and client-specific training aids, examples, templates, and data modeling.

4- Support services in the form of technology updates, knowledge base, answers to questions, and tailored documentation in hybrid and interrelated information technology.

Courseware for Teaching
Given the scarcity of up to date industry standard mainframe textbooks, courseware is an important component in SYS-ED's mainframe training: student hand-out, presentation slides, reference guide, training aids, and a library of exercises. The principles of adult learning and the standards of the New York State Department of Education have been applied to the mainframe programming skills, programming language, and system software curriculum; interpreting and translating content into performance objectives, narrative descriptions, and diagrams which explain. The full complement of training medium is used to help business and information technology professionals learn.

Mainframe curriculum can be reviewed in a courseware as a learning center format:

z/OS/JCL - Basic PL/1 Programming

As part of presenting an instructor-led information mainframe programming skills course at the client location, courseware is evaluated and organized for subsequent use in a web-based infrastructure and delivery medium. This service is provided free of charge.

Qualifying a Training Assignment
SYS-ED will not accept a mainframe training assignment without a consultation with the prospective client organization. We review the background of the employees to be trained, operating environment, standards, project specifications, and standards, and use that information to select the code snippets, examples, skeleton programs, and hands-on exercises. We then prepare a training strategy: lesson plan, courseware, training aids, and validation assessment. The pre course consultation allow us to identify and differentiate between teaching an industry standard course as compared to the client’s true need for educational consultancy. And when are not confident that we can provide a superior training outcome, will politely turn down an assignment.

CETi Knowledge Base
Computer Education Techniques reviews information in the public domain distributed by software companies, international standards committees, and purveyors of open source software. We perform our own independent analysis of white papers, software benchmarks, and new software products. Vendor documentation and third party content is selectively incorporated into our courseware and training aids. SYS-ED clients are invited to submit mainframe questions. Our system consultants and CETi Technology Partners answer, explain, and where applicable reference source documentation. Questions are reviewed and answered on a first-come/first serve-basis. This service is available through our categorized and software specific mainframe websites.

Mainframe Training Programs Portfolio: Mainframe Training Services

SYS-ED offers tailored "entry-level" and "fast-track" mainframe training programs.

Standard entry-level training programs consist of four components: z/OS operating system, programming skills, programming language, and system software. These programs have been developed and refined over a quarter century of consultancy and teaching and draw upon the SYS-ED courseware library.
Tailored fast-track programs are comprised of course modules selected by the client organization: topics, examples, workshops, validation assessments, and duration. Many clients also elect to incorporate an educational consulting component which reflects their standards and implementation strategy for project development.

Mainframe Training in New York

Mainframe Courses in New York
SYS-ED's mainframe courses are tough, but they're worth it. Our challenging hands-on mainframe training provides a foundation and framework for Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, healthcare providers, software houses, and consulting companies to meet their mainframe staffing requirements and acquire specialized mainframe skillsets.1

Courseware
SYS-ED's mainframe courseware is highly respected in the IT field. We draw upon our extensive library of courseware, sample programs, and case studies to explain, demonstrate, and teach the real-world mainframe information technology. Our mainframe curricula include industry standard and consultancy derived content. We have the capability to provide tailored workshops and integrated training programs on z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM, and third party emulation workbench platforms.

Teaching is Our Business
Most computer training companies are divisions of large software companies or consulting companies. Not SYS-ED. Our only goal is to provide world class mainframe training for motivated IT professionals - no more and no less. Because we're independent, we're free to concentrate on teaching - and since 1980 we have been doing it very well.

Our Teachers Know How to Teach
SYS-ED instructors combine teaching skills with broad practical experience as consultants. Our instructors average 30 years of experience in the mainframe environment - operating systems, programming languages, 3rd party utilities and development aids, and system software. And they know how to teach it. We teach not only "how to", but "why", building a solid foundation in fundamentals and insights into advanced materials. After a course, they are available to answer questions.

Enrollment - SYS-ED Mainframe Courses are NOT for Everyone
No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED mainframe course, without a consultation with our Director of Education. We review the operational objectives and project specifications for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training. The employee is only allowed to enroll if they have the background corresponding to the appropriate learning path.

Mainframe Training in New York, at Your Office, or via the Web
SYS-ED mainframe courses are held at our training center in New York City and in conjunction with Technology Partners in North America and Europe. If you prefer, we'll arrange tailored mainframe training on-site at your organization’s facilities inclusive of mobile computer classroom set-up. On-site mainframe courses can include the identical workshops, case studies, and hands-on approach as the mainframe training we offer in New York.

For additional information including outlines, availability of private courses, references, and course customization, contact David Shapiro at our New York office at 212-564-9147 or register online.
