Courseware for Teaching

Back in the 1970's when mainframe was “king”, IBM was  the major player (with all due respect to Burroughs, Control Data, Honeywell, and Unisys), and the common complaint was that the IBM manuals were difficult to read and looking up information and finding answers to questions required searches in multiple sources. The outcome from all that effort was typically a lot of partial answers. There was universal agreement that the IBM documentation on MVS, DOS/VSE and VM programming skills, programming languages, systems software, telecommunications, was acceptable for reference, but not designed for helping DP professionals learn. That was one of the compelling needs behind the founding of SYS-ED and an area of comparative advantage in relation to the software companies and our competitors in the training business. In the years to follow, several members of our staff would author industry standard text books in conjunction with developing SYS-ED courseware.

As the industry has evolved in response to competitive forces and new technologies and methodologies in software engineering have brought unique products to market, SYS-ED has remained a comforting constant in the field of information technology. Our library of mainframe legacy courseware consisting of sample programs, skeleton programs, tailored workshops and training aids was developed as part during consultancy assignments.  Unlike IBM documentation, SYS-ED courseware has been designed to teach and explain; we call it knowledge transfer. It is an integral component in our fast-track legacy programming skills and language courses and integrated training programs - TSO/ISPF, JCL, COBOL, Assembler Language, REXX, PL/1, FORTRAN, and RPG. SYS-ED courseware is incrementally refined and updated when there are new releases by the source software company and each time we teach it. Our core mainframe curriculum and accompanying courseware have been submitted to the New York State Department of Education for licensure. Sample and derivative content, along with integrated learning paths, and self-assessments are available from our programming language, utilities and development tools and system software websites.

Explain and Teach

SYS-ED’s hard earned consultant’s swagger spans the modern era of information technology. Many of our original cadre of instructors are still with us; albeit with their expertise having logically expanded into WebSphere MQ middleware in conjunction with open source and proprietary software. They average 30 years experience in the field and are experts in the increasingly hybrid mix and match software configurations - WebSphere and Java, IBM mainframe and UNIX, WebSphere MQ middleware and Oracle or .NET, to name a few.  We take great pride in our ability to incorporate project specifications into our courseware in the form of performance objectives; it plays a major role in ensuring that a project is not simply completed; but is efficiently coded, documented, and maintainable. Bottom line, when it comes to educational consultancy, few source software or consulting companies have the credentials or experience that SYS-ED has. And most importantly, we recognize that our reputation is only as good as our last course. We continually apply the new technologies for helping people learn and become more efficient back on the job.

Learning Paths

No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course without a consultation with our Director of Education.  We review the project specifications and the operational objectives for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training.  The employee is only allowed to register if they have the appropriate background corresponding to the correct learning path.

Additional Information

So when it comes to your mainframe training needs, by all means contact IBM and review their course outlines and performance objectives. And then contact either dshapiro@sysed.com or dsilverberg@sysed.com for a complementary consultation.

SYS-ED courses are NOT open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, healthcare providers, consulting companies, and mid-sized businesses are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and ONLY after a telephone consultation with our mainframe systems consultant/curriculum manager. This is essential for ensuring that the individual be placed in the course which corresponds to the employer’s operational objectives, operating environment, version of software, and development platform.
