Compuware Corporation Software and SYS-ED

Since 1980, SYS-ED has been a leader in teaching industry standard and tailored mainframe development tools and utilities courses. SYS-ED offers a comprehensive curriculum for training on Compuware Corporation software in conjunction with mainframe legacy programming languages and system software. Our staff of system consultants and CETi Technology Partners explain and highlight the nuances of the third party and IBM software for managing data and maintaining IBM mainframe production environments. And for mainframe installations which utilize Compuware utilities and development tools software in hybrid combinations with Computer Associates, IBM, Serena Software, and Syncsort software; the value added quality to the training is integrated exercises and educational consultancy to achieve operational objectives.

And truth be told, we receive requests from software companies to provide assistance in the evaluation and utilization of their software with mainframe utilities and development tools in IBM mainframe system software environments.

Courseware for Teaching

Compuware Corporation does not provide a NRV: Nationally Recognized Vendor curriculum for its mainframe utilities and development tools software. Likewise, IBM does not offer courseware and training aids designed specifically to teach its system software. Given the scarcity of up to date industry standard legacy programming language text books, SYS-ED has undertaken the responsibility to develop, maintain, and refine its own mainframe utilities and development tools courseware. This courseware is utilized in classroom instruction and distance-learning delivery medium. SYS-ED mainframe courseware is extensible and can be augmented with subject matter and examples from interrelated areas of information technology.

COBOL Debugging with Abend-AID

  • Interpret the detail and summary information which is available through Abend-AID; then use the information to perform problem resolution.

  • Address the causes of errors by customizing the text of a statement and the content of its related fields.

File-AID: DB2

  • How to browse and edit two related or unrelated tables.

  • Create objects based upon installation standards and generate DDL for existing objects.

File-AID: IMS

  • How to use a before-and-after view which displays the content of individual fields in each changed segment.

  • The use of IMS-tailored commands for increased precision and flexibility:

    • How a parent segment and its children can be copied or repositioned in the database using either a specific COBOL-formatted key or a command such as PARENT, CHILD or TWIN.

File-AID: TSO

  • Address concurrency issues when editing a VSAM dataset while it is being used by CICS or other batch programs.

  • Convert and transfer data between multiple platforms: mainframe, UNIX, and MS Windows.

CICS Xpediter

  • Program preparation in order to efficiently debug and test CICS applications under Xpediter.

  • Techniques for debugging CICS programs, including viewing and testing data in VSAM and DB2 tables.

TSO Xpediter

  • Use existing batch JCL for performing a foreground allocation of datasets in order to debug programs interactively.

  • Problem resolution and customization of the TSO Xpediter SETUP procedure.

Professional Distance-learning Service Definition of Service

New York State Department of Education Standards

SYS-ED's distance-learning training service is 65% lecture with the remaining 35% of the service provided in the form of scheduled interactive question and answer sessions with a subject matter expert, hands-on exercises, optional validation assessment, and submission of questions through our technology exchange websites.

Enrollment is contingent upon the prospective trainee's having been qualified by our Director of Education to have the appropriate background for the training and review of a checklist of items required for transmission of the service to the client location: bandwidth, firewall, base operating system, software requirements, web browser, and set-up of hands-on machine exercises.

Alternative web-based and e-learning training is available: self-paced, presentation through the client's authoring system, or podcast. These tailored services are offered selectively.

Additional Information

So when it comes to your mainframe training needs, contact Compuware and review their course outlines and performance objectives. And then contact SYS-ED, dshapiro@sysed.com / dsilverberg@sysed.com or call 212-564-9147.

SYS-ED mainframe courses are NOT open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, and healthcare providers are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and ONLY after a telephone consultation with our mainframe systems consultant/curriculum manager. This is essential for ensuring that the individual be placed in the course which corresponds to the employer’s operational objectives, operating environment, version of software, and development platform.

Mainframe Websites

SYS-ED's websites compile, organize, and present software specific and established operational categorizations of information technology. They provide a framework for assessing knowledge transfer in a variety of delivery formats: web-based training, classroom instruction, technology updates, courseware, training aids, learning paths, and validation assessment.
