Computer Associates Software and SYS-ED

Since 1980, SYS-ED staff and CETi Technology Partners have been doing application development and maintenance and providing training services on Computer Associates software. In the case of InterTest - On-line Software International and Panvalet - Applied Data Research, our original work predated CA's acquisition and ownership of the software. SYS-ED's mainframe utilities and development tools curriculum includes industry standard content and tailored client specific training in conjunction with training on IBM system software: CICS, DB2, and IMS.

We teach the nuances of Computer Associates software as a resource and tool for managing data and maintaining an IBM mainframe production environment. Guidelines not readily discernible in the source documentation are demonstrated. When an organization utilizes software from multiple software companies - Computer Associates, Compuware, Serena Software, and Syncsort, the value added quality to the SYS-ED training service are integrated exercises and explanations as the best way to achieve operational objectives. Truth to be told, we get requests directly from Computer Associates for training their clients in specialized IBM mainframe environments such as DYL-280 and IMS DB DL/1 and IBM mainframe system software.

CA-Easytrieve Plus

CA-Easytrieve provides the ability to integrate programs written in other languages. Under z/OS both static and dynamic calls to programs can be invoked for the purpose of utilizing legacy programs written in COBOL or Assembler. Courses can be tailored to include the new and advanced features built in to CA-Easytrieve including MS Windows support, file searching, producing reports in HTML format, and optional database interfaces for DB/2 CA-software provides XML output capabilities.

In Easytrieve Plus there is a XL parameter on the REPORT statement which can be used for specifying that a report can be generated as an XML file. This allows Easytrieve programs to be integrated directly into web applications and for the generation of real-time and selectable reports with dynamic data.

CA-Endevor Elements and CA-InterTest

When used in the CA-Endevor environment, CICS CA-InterTest there are issues which need to be addressed. Selection of the CICS region, utilizing NEWCFOPY and selection of the appropriate load libraries is required.

The CA-InterTest debugging package utilizes a PROTSYM file which contains information about the Assembler or COBOL source elements that make up a given load module. There is an option of updating the PROSYM file by either a foreground or batch operation. Other options to be selected include information about the specific compiler or assembler used for the source code and the PROGRAM-ID or CSECT name for the module. It may be necessary to supply the fully qualified names for both the SYSPRINT information and the specified PROTSYM file. SYS-ED teaches tailored client-specific implementations of CA-InterTest in the Endevor environment.

BMS/GT Maps as CA-Endevor Elements

The BMS/GT product maintains CICS map descriptions within its own database. There are specialized procedures for storing BMS macro source code and generated COPYBOOK maps created with the the BMS/GT product in in CA-SCM Endevor. It will be necessary to create the maps using standard BMS/GT procedures; the Endevor processors will extract the generated macros and generate the physical and symbolic maps.

SYS-ED staff are recognized experts in multi-vendor software training in the IBM mainframe environment.
