State of the Market
Software companies are developing products which build upon the longstanding investment that their clients have made in legacy mainframe programming languages and system software. Mainstream strategies have been adopted for upgrading programming languages, primarily to Enterprise COBOL, with new development in open source Java. As organizational enterprise, moves to implement SOA - Service Oriented Architecture, IBM's next generation of system software is being used for web enabling data: WebSphere MQ middleware, WebSphere family of software, Rational, and DB2. Some client organizations have made the decision to use CICS Transaction Server and to a lesser degree the IMS hierarchical database with PL/1, Assembler Language, REXX, and FORTRAN. However, unlike the 1970's and early 1980's, neither the hardware or software is exclusively IBM.  Proprietary software by major players such as Oracle, Microsoft, Peoplesoft, SAP and the increasingly widespread utilization of open source software also has to be accounted for in the emerging cloud computing equation. There is no single best strategy which can be uniformly applied to an organizational enterprise. In most situations, application development will be specific to the organization and integrated in the operations of the enterprise.

Why SYS-ED for Programming Languages Training
When it comes to programming skills (JCL, ISPF, CMS) and legacy programming languages (COBOL, Assembler Language, PL/1, FORTRAN, and REXX), evolutionary systems software (VSAM, CICS, and IMS, DB2, IDMS, and ADABAS) and new technologies integrated with IBM mainframe systems (WebSphere MQ), SYS-ED’s credentials in terms of consultancy experience and advanced degrees in many situations will be superior to that of the employees from the source software companies. Since 1980, SYS-ED's staff has been providing consultancy services and training services to and for major software houses, consulting firms, Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, and healthcare providers. Few software or consulting organizations have the skilled personnel or have been doing mainframe training longer or better than SYS-ED.

Technology Driven IT Training

Educational Consultancy and Value Added Service
Our first generation and longstanding consultancy experience provides us with the privileged perspective from which to recognize and differentiate between industry standard content and educational consulting. We review coding standards and then have the client select the examples and sample programs for the hands-on exercises. It is our standard policy to examine client documentation and tailored create skeleton programs. At the client discretion, assessment validation can be provided. Equally as important, SYS-ED is independent from the software companies. We review software company manuals, red books, proprietary information in the public domain, and open source documentation. SYS-ED analyzes benchmarks for software updates and new products. Vendor documentation and third party content is interpreted and selectively incorporated into our courseware and training aids.

Knowledge Base
SYS-ED clients are welcome to submit programming languages questions. Our system consultants and technology partners answer, explain, and where applicable reference source documentation. Questions are reviewed and answered on a first-come/first serve-basis. This service is available through our categorized and software specific mainframe websites.

Mainframe Courseware
An important component in the successful delivery of mainframe legacy programming languages training was the development of mainframe courseware: student hand-outs, sample programs, skeleton programs, workshops, and training aids. SYS-ED courseware incorporates industry standard content and consultancy derived techniques for coding and debugging applications written in legacy programming languages inclusive of performance design and optimization with IBM system software. The collective efforts of our subject matter experts are managed by editors, who have multidisciplinary expertise in information technology, text book authoring, and degrees in management and business administration. The classic principles of adult learning are applied to the content, interpreting and translating subject matter into performance objectives, narrative descriptions, and diagrams which explain the design, program logic and underlying architecture of the evolution of the legacy programming language. The courseware has been designed to utilize a variety of presentation formats: textual, tabular, diagrammatic, bullet point, and code snippets.

Our courseware library has been incrementally augmented, revised, and maintained. It is highly valued, especially with legacy mainframe programming languages, where there is a scarcity of up to date text books. For organization’s who have a requirement for their own employees to teach mainframe subject matter or the need to have content available for presentation through a web-based learning medium, we will tailor and license our courseware. It is standard policy for SYS-ED to provide courseware which will extend an instructor-led course into a distance-learning format. Likewise, courseware can be migrated for utilization by the client into an authoring system for content delivery via the Internet.

Additional Information

So when it comes to your mainframe training needs, by all means contact IBM and review their course outlines and performance objectives. And then contact SYS-ED: dshapiro@sysed.com or dsilverberg@sysed.com.

SYS-ED mainframe courses are NOT open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, healthcare providers, consulting companies, and mid-sized businesses are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and ONLY after a telephone consultation with our mainframe curriculum manager. This is essential for ensuring that the individual be placed in the course which corresponds to the employer’s operational objectives, operating environment, version of software, and development platform.
