Efficient Application Development

Compuware Xpediter Software

Compuware Xpediter software is a set of developer productivity tools in the IBM mainframe environment which accelerates the coding and debugging of programs and automates the analysis, testing process, and implementation of applications.

The role and advantages associated with Xpediter are:

  • An accurate representation of application functionality.
  • Identification of high risk code in conjunction with the utilization of maintainability metrics.
  • Intra and inter application impact analysis which designates change points for enhancements and corrections to be made in business processes and data flows.
  • Programs intercept and trapping for the COBOL, PL/1, and C languages or HLASM applications; this capability is independent as to where the program has been initiated or where the program is executing.
  • Code execution reports for assessing test related risk.
  • Documentation of the testing process.

Xpediter Tra
ining by SYS-ED

Since 1980, SYS-ED has been helping organizations meet their operational and staffing requirements with Xpediter - TSO, CICS, and DB2. Our staff of system consultants are experts with Xpediter and the Compuware family of products and IBM system software.

Compuware Software Functionality
CICS Xpediter Provides real-time control of application code execution for trapping abends and the capability to locate, identify, and eliminate application logic errors. By providing access to data files and CICS storage, the debugging process can be streamlined.
TSO Xpediter Provides the capability to integrate COBOL, DB2 and Xpediter in application development and maintenance. There are techniques which can be implemented through TSO Xpediter to manage efficiently large programs and work with massive amounts of data.
Abend-AID Provides the capability to identify errors and verify test results; this includes efficient debugging techniques and testing methods. A significant advantage associated with Abend-AID in the debugging process is its integration with both Compuware File-AID and Xpediter and IBM Debug Tool and File Manager.

We have 30 years experience in coding, debugging, and providing maintenance support on IBM mainframe systems with legacy programming languages and VSAM, CICS Transaction Serverand DB2. This been there done that experience provides us with the privileged perspective from which to teach the industry standard Xpediter facilities and provide invaluable performance and troubleshooting guidelines. We refer it to as educational consultancy.

If you’re shop is utilizing a combination of mainframe utilities and development tools from the Big 3: Compuware, Computer Associates, and IBM, then SYS-ED's integrated workshops and examples will make a significant difference in training your next generation of mainframe programmers. They will learn not just how to perform specific Xpediter tasks; but will receive a foundation in the underlying mainframe system software. Additional tailored workshops can be selected from the CETi courseware library.

SYS-ED does not sell software; we only teach! And towards this end, we apply the full complement of training medium to help IT professionals learn. In our courses, students learn by doing; one-third of their class time will be spent hands-on with Xpediter on our z/OS system. Each student receives a course hand-out and training aid. After a course is over, students are welcome to ask the inevitable questions which come up back on the job.

Few software or consulting companies offer the comprehensive Xpediter, File-AID family software, and mainframe programmer productivity tools and development utilities courses that we do.

Upon completion of a SYS-ED instructor-led course at the client location, it is standard policy to organize content for future utilization in a web-based training infrastructure.

Scarcity of Up to Date Mainframe Textbooks

SYS-ED mainframe utilities and development tools courseware and training aids extend the source documentation and incorporate an examination of the underlying architecture, program logic, and sample programs which have been validated on consulting projects. In our opinion, when there is a scarcity of up to date industry standard textbooks, courseware which “explains and demonstrates” is fundamental to an effective learning experience. Industry-specific examples and workshops can be selected from the CETi courseware library.

Upon completion of a SYS-ED instructor-led course at the client location, it is standard policy to organize content for future utilization in a web-based training infrastructure.

Xpediter Courses and Mainframe Utilities Training

The typical comments were:
1. That it is extremely difficult to find Xpediter and mainframe utilities and development tools training for mainframe programmers.
2. That there is a scarcity of intensive 1-, 2-, and 3- day courses which provide hands-on experience and the skillset for dataset management on z/OS systems.
3. That a high percentage of open enrollment Xpediter courses are cancelled.
4. That travel costs and living expenses in a majority of situations are a significant constraint when it comes to attending a Xpediter course.
5. That it is important to have a resource for asking Xpediter questions once the programming language course is complete.

In response we say:

SYS-ED has been conducting courses in the public domain since 1980; however, there have been changes in the laws and regulations governing computer training in the state of New York. The schedule on our websites reflects a projected time frame for licensure with the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision and submission and approval of curriculum. It will be updated quarterly.

Professional Distance-learning Service

Definition of Service

New York State Department of Education Standards

SYS-ED's distance-learning training service is 65% lecture with the remaining 35% of the service provided in the form of scheduled interactive question and answer sessions with a subject matter expert, hands-on exercises, optional validation assessment, and submission of questions through our technology exchange websites.

Enrollment is contingent upon the prospective trainee's having been qualified by our Director of Education to have the appropriate background for the training and review of a checklist of items required for transmission of the service to the client location: bandwidth, firewall, base operating system, software requirements, web browser, and set-up of hands-on machine exercises.

Alternative web-based and e-learning training is available: self-paced, presentation through the client's authoring system, or podcast. These tailored services are offered selectively.

Mainframe Training Programs

SYS-ED offers industry standard and tailored entry-level and fast-track mainframe training programs.

Entry-level training programs consist of four components: z/OS operating system, programming skills, programming language, and system software. These programs have been developed and refined over a quarter century of consultancy and teaching and draw upon the SYS-ED courseware library.
Tailored fast-track programs are comprised of course modules selected by the client organization: topics, examples, workshops, validation assessments, and duration. Many clients also elect to incorporate an educational consulting component which reflects their standards and implementation strategy for project development.

Private client-site mainframe training programs are supported with a courseware as learning center delivery medium.

Three major issues will have to be evaluated in relation to mainframe information technology training in the 21st century:

1. The degree of web-based access to mainframe data which will be allowed and the issue of security.
2. The appropriate strategic mix of commercial and open source software.
3. How much of the mainframe development should be contracted outside of the United States, be performed by consultants based in the United States as compared to having full-time salaried employees perform the work.

Mainframe Training in New York

Mainframe Courses in New York
SYS-ED's mainframe courses are tough, but they're worth it. Our challenging "hands-on" mainframe training provides a foundation and framework for Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, healthcare providers, software houses, and consulting companies to meet their mainframe staffing requirements and acquire specialized mainframe skillsets.1 Mainframe utilities and development courses at the present time are only offered at client locations.

Courseware
SYS-ED's mainframe development tools and utilities courseware is highly acclaimed in the IT field. We draw upon our extensive library of courseware, sample programs, and case studies to explain, demonstrate, and teach the real-world mainframe information technology. Our mainframe curricula include industry standard and consultancy derived content. We have the capability to provide tailored workshops and integrated training programs on z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM, and third party emulation workbench platforms.

Teaching is Our Business
Most computer training companies are divisions of large software companies or consulting companies. Not SYS-ED. Our only goal is to provide world class mainframe training for motivated IT professionals - no more and no less. Because we're independent, we're free to concentrate on teaching - and since 1980 we have been doing it very well.

Our Teachers Know How to Teach
SYS-ED instructors combine teaching skills with broad practical experience as consultants. Our instructors average 30 years of experience in the mainframe environment - operating systems, programming languages, 3rd party utilities/development aids, and system software. And they know how to teach it. We teach not only "how to", but "why", building a solid foundation in fundamentals and insights into advanced materials.

Enrollment - SYS-ED Mainframe Courses are NOT for Everyone
No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED mainframe course, without a consultation with our Director of Education. We review the operational objectives and project specifications for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training. The employee is only allowed to register if they have the background corresponding to the appropriate learning path.

Mainframe Training in New York, at Your Office, or via the Web
SYS-ED mainframe courses are held at our training center in midtown Manhattan and in conjunction with CETi Technology Partners in North America and Europe. If you prefer, we'll arrange tailored mainframe training on-site at your organization’s facilities inclusive of mobile computer classroom set-up. On-site mainframe courses can include the identical workshops, case studies, and hands-on approach as the mainframe training we offer in New York city.

For additional information including outlines, availability of private courses, references, and course customization, contact David Shapiro at our New York office at 212-564-9147 or register online.
