Evolving Role of the IBM Mainframe The foundation of IBM mainframe hardware and system software is high availability, security, and processing power. In addition to running core applications, the mainframe operating system is being extended for use with web-based architecture and distributed applications. The longstanding programming skills software and third party development tools have been updated to edit new data types, manage workflows, remove dead code, and identify the impacts of code changes in coupled application architectures. For organizational enterprise migrating to a WAS: WebSphere Application Server, the z/OS mainframe operating system is being used to:
The challenge in bringing about a cost effective modernization is to identify embedded business rules and fragmented businesses processes and then restructure the code. In conjunction with its WebSphere and Rational families of software, IBM also has updated its programming skills software: z/OS/JCL, TSO/ISPF, ISPF Dialog Manager, and CLISTs. ISPF Dialog Manager - CUA Features IBM has updated and expanded the featureset in ISPF screens for creating front ends in ISPF applications with Dialog Manager.
Mainframe Programming Skills Training by SYS-ED The mainframe operations and support personnel you need may already be working for you. SYS-ED offers challenging mainframe programming skills and operations training: TSO/ISPF, OS/JCL, ICCF, CMS, CLISTs, ISPF Dialog Manager (formerly Dialog Manager), and REXX. Our-fast track courses range from 2 to 5 days in duration and have an extensive hands-on component which teaches browsing, editing, job submission, print queue control, and DASD management as part of providing a foundation for acquiring proficiency in the IBM mainframe environment: z/OS, z/VSE, and z/VM. These courses also can be taught as part of integrated mainframe training programs, in which the examples and exercises can be tailored to the client's operating system, primary programming language, and system software environment. Equally as important, SYS-ED recognizes and differentiates between industry standard content and educational consultancy. We review documented coding standards and then have the client select the examples, sample programs, and exercises from our courseware library. If necessary, we will create new ones and also provide skeleton programs. At the client discretion, assessment validation can be utilized. In addition to the z/OS, z/VSE, and Z/VM editing and development tools, SYS-ED curriculum includes courses for z/OS mainframe integration with the client/server UNIX/Linux and MS Windows platforms. Guidelines for PC-based tools are provided for task-oriented views which access and control mainframe data. For tailored private training, the client selects the tools to be taught: Eclipse environment, CICS Tools, or Rational Tools. Since 1980, SYS-ED has been providing instructor-led mainframe courses and training services to and for major software houses, consulting firms, Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, and healthcare providers. The credentials of our staff credentials in terms of consultancy experience and advanced degrees in many situations will be superior to that of the employees from the source software companies. Few software or consulting organizations have the skilled personnel or have been doing mainframe training longer or better than SYS-ED.
Courseware as a Learning Center As part of presenting an instructor-led information mainframe programming skills course at the client location, courseware is evaluated and organized for subsequent use in a web-based infrastructure and delivery medium. This service is provided free of charge. |

Evolving IT - Interrelated Technologies Training on IBM mainframe systems and more specifically programming languages and system software is more complex and challenging than ever before. The “business and training as usual” mainframe paradigm no longer can be simply applied. Most organization’s have a huge investment in a working infrastructure. However, there are new web server and web enabled technologies which require integration with the mainframe, client/server systems, and enterprise databases. There are long term implications regarding strategies for upgrading the legacy applications, many now 30 or more years of age, while retrofitting and transitioning to the new technologies which for the most part are significantly better than the programming languages developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Moreover, for the first time in modern information technology, there are demographic issues which have to be addressed. The original work force who coded, maintained, and documented the legacy applications are reaching retirement age and there is a need for qualified personnel. Very few colleges, universities, or junior colleges offer training on legacy programming languages and IBM system software. SYS-ED trained a significant number of the first generation of mainframe DP personnel. And look forward to training their IT successors in the 21st century.
