z/OS, z/VM and z/VSE: On-line Editing,
Application Maintenance, and Operations

Evolving Role of the IBM Mainframe

The foundation of IBM mainframe hardware and system software is high availability, security, and processing power. In addition to running core applications, the mainframe operating system is being extended for use with web-based architecture and distributed applications. The longstanding programming skills software and third party development tools have been updated to edit new data types, manage workflows, remove dead code, and identify the impacts of code changes in coupled application architectures.

For organizational enterprise migrating to a WAS: WebSphere Application Server, the z/OS mainframe operating system is being used to:
  • leverage z/OS qualities of service for continuous availability and optimized performance for mission-critical applications.
  • use SOA: Service Oriented Architecture hub capabilities to minimize expensive communications and networking hardware.
  • facilitate the adoption of SOA for enterprise modernization through tighter integration of new workloads.
  • promote the value of composite application and mission critical workloads on System z.
  • accelerate ROI through bidirectional connectivity and reuse of existing Java assets.

The challenge in bringing about a cost effective modernization is to identify embedded business rules and fragmented businesses processes and then restructure the code. In conjunction with its WebSphere and Rational families of software, IBM also has updated its programming skills software: z/OS/JCL, TSO/ISPF, ISPF Dialog Manager, and CLISTs.

Mainframe Programming Skills Training by SYS-ED

The mainframe operations and support personnel you need may already be working for you. SYS-ED offers challenging mainframe programming skills and operations training: TSO/ISPF, OS/JCL, ICCF, CMS, CLISTs, ISPF Dialog Manager (formerly Dialog Manager), and REXX.

Our-fast track courses range from 2 to 5 days in duration and have an extensive hands-on component which teaches browsing, editing, job submission, print queue control, and DASD management as part of providing a foundation for acquiring proficiency in the IBM mainframe environment: z/OS, z/VSE, and z/VM. These courses also can be taught as part of integrated mainframe training programs, in which the examples and exercises can be tailored to the client's operating system, primary programming language, and system software environment. Equally as important, SYS-ED recognizes and differentiates between industry standard content and educational consultancy. We review documented coding standards and then have the client select the examples, sample programs, and exercises from our courseware library. If necessary, we will create new ones and also provide skeleton programs. At the client discretion, assessment validation can be utilized.

In addition to the z/OS, z/VSE, and Z/VM editing and development tools, SYS-ED curriculum includes courses for z/OS mainframe integration with the client/server UNIX/Linux and MS Windows platforms. Guidelines for PC-based tools are provided for task-oriented views which access and control mainframe data. For tailored private training, the client selects the tools to be taught: Eclipse environment, CICS Tools, or Rational Tools.

Since 1980, SYS-ED has been providing instructor-led mainframe courses and training services to and for major software houses, consulting firms, Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, and healthcare providers. The credentials of our staff credentials in terms of consultancy experience and advanced degrees in many situations will be superior to that of the employees from the source software companies.
Few software or consulting organizations have the skilled personnel or have been doing mainframe training longer or better than SYS-ED.

Courseware as a Learning Center

With the scarcity of up to date industry standard mainframe textbooks, courseware is an important component in SYS-ED mainframe programming skills training: student hand-out, presentation slides, reference guide, training aids, and a library of exercises. The principles of adult learning and the standards of the New York State Department of Education have been applied to IBM's mainframe programming skills subject matter: interpreting and translating content into performance objectives, narrative descriptions, and diagrams which explain. The full complement of training medium is used to help business and information technology professionals learn.
The z/OS JCL - Basic courseware has been expanded into a learning center format. It can be reviewed in a advertising free environment at: http://www.computeredtech.com/prg_content/jcl/main.asp.

As part of presenting an instructor-led information mainframe programming skills course at the client location, courseware is evaluated and organized for subsequent use in a web-based infrastructure and delivery medium. This service is provided free of charge.

Yes, We Still Offer Mainframe Training!

Over the past year, we have had a number of inquiries regarding whether SYS-ED still offered programming skills training for IT professionals.

The typical comments were:
1. That it is extremely difficult to find open enrollment job control language, editors, scripting, and dialog management training for specific data management and application maintenance tasks.
2. That there is a scarcity of fast-track programming skills courses, 2 - 5 days in duration, geared to corporations and their employees.
3. That a high percentage of programming skills courses are cancelled.
4. That travel costs and living expenses in a majority of situations are a significant constraint when it comes to attending a programming language course.
5. That it is important to have a resource for asking questions once the mainframe programming skills course is complete.

Evolving IT - Interrelated Technologies

Training on IBM mainframe systems and more specifically programming languages and system software is more complex and challenging than ever before. The “business and training as usual” mainframe paradigm no longer can be simply applied. Most organization’s have a huge investment in a working infrastructure. However, there are new web server and web enabled technologies which require integration with the mainframe, client/server systems, and enterprise databases. There are long term implications regarding strategies for upgrading the legacy applications, many now 30 or more years of age, while retrofitting and transitioning to the new technologies which for the most part are significantly better than the programming languages developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Moreover, for the first time in modern information technology, there are demographic issues which have to be addressed. The original work force who coded, maintained, and documented the legacy applications are reaching retirement age and there is a need for qualified personnel. Very few colleges, universities, or junior colleges offer training on legacy programming languages and IBM system software.

SYS-ED trained a significant number of the first generation of mainframe DP personnel. And look forward to training their IT successors in the 21st century.

Mainframe Training in New York

Mainframe Courses in New York
SYS-ED's mainframe courses are tough, but they're worth it. Our challenging "hands-on" mainframe training provides a foundation and framework for Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, healthcare providers, software houses, and consulting companies to meet their mainframe staffing requirements and acquire specialized mainframe skillsets.1  Mainframe utilities and development courses at the present time are only offered at client locations.

Courseware
SYS-ED's mainframe courseware is highly respected. We draw upon our extensive library of courseware, sample programs, and case studies to explain, demonstrate, and teach the real-world mainframe information technology. Our mainframe curriculum include industry standard and consultancy derived content. We have the capability to provide tailored workshops and integrated training programs on z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM, and third party emulation workbench/platforms.

Teaching is Our Business
Most computer training companies are divisions of large software companies or consulting companies. Not SYS-ED. Our only goal is to provide quality mainframe training for motivated IT professionals - no more and no less. Because we're independent, we're free to concentrate on teaching - and since 1980 we have been doing it very well.

Our Teachers Know How to Teach
SYS-ED instructors combine teaching skills with broad practical experience as consultants. Our instructors average 30 years of experience in the mainframe environment - operating systems, programming languages, 3rd party utilities/development aids, and system software. And they know how to teach it. We teach not only "how to", but "why", and provide insights into advanced subject matter.

Enrollment - SYS-ED Mainframe Courses are NOT for Everyone
No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED mainframe course, without a consultation with our Director of Education. We review the operational objectives and project specifications for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training. The employee is only allowed to register if they have the background corresponding to the appropriate learning path.

Mainframe Training in New York, at Your Office, or via the Web
SYS-ED mainframe courses are held at training center in New York City and in conjunction with Technology Partners in North America and Europe. If you prefer, we'll arrange tailored mainframe training on-site at your organization’s facilities inclusive of mobile computer classroom set-up. On-site mainframe courses can include the identical workshops, case studies, and hands-on approach as the mainframe training we offer in New York.

For additional information including outlines, availability of private courses, references, and course customization, contact David Shapiro at our New York office at 212-564-9147 or register online.
