Oracle Database and Web Server Development Platform

With its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle Corporation is now both a major hardware and software company. This has lead to changes in its business model and strategy for growth. Oracle has been promoting the performance, scalability, and security of its products and the benefits of having the main hardware and software being controlled by a single company. However, it is unproven as to whether growth by acquisition will translate into profitability. Sun Microsystems server business was in decline when Oracle bought it. Oracle has started selling those servers loaded with its database software.

Exadata, is an important focus for Oracle, which hopes it will win customers from its competitors. In the first quarter 2011, Oracle executives projections were for a two billion pipeline of sales leads for Exadata. Competition from IBM DB2 compression may well make this an unrealistic assumption. In the second quarter 2011, Oracle Corporation announced that it would stop developing Oracle software running on certain Hewlet-Packard servers. This would appear to be an attempt to force customers to switch Oracle hardware. It is expensive and difficult to switch from Oracle to competitor software. The danger is that Oracle may be pushing clients to the point where they will cut back on hardware purchases, scale back its Oracle licenses, and begin transitioning to the information technology alternatives: IBM, Microsoft, or FOSS: Free Open Source Software. There is an increased likelihood that Oracle will be hard pressed to continue to meet its expansion and profitability objectives. Industry analysts have calculated that when acquisitions and currency movements are excluded, the sales increase from new software licenses has been relatively flat over the past three years.

Oracle Database Software

Market research firms have ranked the Oracle database as the leader in DBMS marketing share, followed by IBM DB2 and then Microsoft SQL Server. Other competitors include open source products such as Firebird, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Ingres, and niche players such as Sybase and MaxDB. Oracle Database 10g is a 31-bit RDBMS available for z/OS mainframe, but Oracle found it difficult to compete with DB2's featureset on z/OS. Oracle has announced it will support 10g on z/OS, but the company will not introduce future versions of its database product on z/OS. Oracle has been more successful in attracting customers to its Linux on System z products.

Oracle Data Compression

Data compression is used to reduce the costs associated with managing rapidly growing data volume content by searching the entire table for repeating data values to compress, improving the overall compression ratio, compressing temporary space used in workloads.

Oracle Corporation software has two product options for data compression: Oracle 11g Advanced Data Compression and Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression. Exadata compression is restricted to data warehouse workloads that are read-only with batch loading. Exadata compression will not work with an operational data warehouse where data is inserted or updated using SQL or with an OLTP application. Exadata data normally is decompressed at the Exadata storage server layer; this means that the data will not stay compressed in memory as it is processed by the Oracle database. This also assumes that Exadata Smart Scan takes place. When data initially loaded with Exadata compression is subsequently updated, then the data is moved to a new data page without Exadata compression. This means that for OLTP or an operational data warehouse using Exadata, there will be extra cost associated with Oracle 11g Advanced Data Compression. The database administrator will have to manage the different Oracle compression options. Regardless as to which Oracle compression option is used, Oracle will not search the entire database table for repeating data values to compress. With Oracle 11g Advanced Data Compression there is a single search of a database page; the Exadata method will have a limited number of database pages for repeating data values. The Oracle 11g database can be used with Exadata.

Oracle Web Server Platform

Oracle Corporation has been aggressive in acquiring technologies and increasing targeted market share. Significant changes in the Oracle software product are being implemented as it moves towards becoming an enterprise computing clearinghouse. WLS: WebLogic Server has been rebranded as Oracle WebLogic Application Server and is now the preferred application server. Complementary components from Oracle Application Server, along with WebLogic Operations Control from BEA and Coherence from Tangosol, have been integrated into WebLogic Server. BEA products are being redesigned to integrate with Oracle Fusion Middleware as part of focusing on the high-end server business for online transaction processing and data warehousing. The SYS-ED curriculum, inclusive of open source Solaris operating system and MySQL database, have been updated to reflect this operational reality.

Professional Distance-learning Service

Definition of Service
New York State Department of Education Standards
SYS-ED's distance-learning training service is 65% lecture with the remaining 35% of the service provided in the form of scheduled interactive question and answer sessions with a subject matter expert, hands-on exercises, optional validation assessment, and submission of questions through our technology exchange websites. Not all Oracle Corporation software is well suited for delivery in a web-based delivery medium.

Enrollment is contingent upon the prospective trainee's having been qualified by our Director of Education to have the appropriate background for the training and review of a checklist of items required for transmission of the service to the client location: bandwidth, firewall, base operating system, software requirements, web browser, and set-up of hands-on machine exercises.

Alternative web-based and e-learning training is available: self-paced, presentation through the client's authoring system, or podcast. These tailored services are offered selectively.

Computer Education Techniques courseware consists of student hand-outs, training aids, documented walkthroughs, and industry-specific exercises. The CETi knowledge base is a service for answering questions, inclusive of the research and validation of the accuracy of information in the public domain. Citation of source documentation and examples are used to provide answers to these questions. Content is selectively added to courseware.

SYS-ED courses are not open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, healthcare providers, and consulting companies are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and ONLY after a telephone consultation with our Director of Education. This is essential for ensuring that the individual be placed in the course which corresponds to the employers operational objectives, version of Oracle, and operating environment.

Our Oracle Corporation software curriculum includes 35+ course titles, with the TC suffix indicating a course that was developed and taught in conjunction with a consulting assignment. Course titles and topics can be viewed by using the Search Engine.

Bottom line: SYS-ED training services provides clients' with the foundation for return on investment. And we look forward to earning the privilege of being called back to teach the advanced courses and the next round of training for new hires.

SYS-ED has been conducting courses in the public domain since 1980; however, there have been changes in the laws and regulations governing computer training in the state of New York. The schedule on our websites reflects a projected time frame for licensure with the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision and submission and approval of curriculum. It will be updated quarterly.

Qualifying an Assignment

SYS-ED will not accept an Oracle training assignment until we confer with the client and review the topics, examples, and workshops to be included in the course. We recognize and differentiate between a course - such as Oracle Application Server: Administration, Oracle: PL/SQL Programming - Advanced, Oracle: Application Development and Tuning, and the requirement for educational consultancy such as - Oracle: Database Administration and Performance Tuning, Oracle: Version to Version Migration Planning, and Oracle Fusion Middleware. The lesson plan is provided to the client as part of the training contract.

Private Courses: Client Location

SYS-ED conducts private courses in North America and Europe. With private training, topics from the course search engine can be combined and consolidated and the exercises tailored. Case in point: several clients have had us conduct accelerated 5-day courses consisting of what is regularly 8 days of subject matter. We also offer integrated Oracle training programs. Private training can be conducted in multiple delivery formats: classroom, distance-learning, or blended web-based delivery format. Contact our New York office for additional information on the selection of content delivery.
