| IMS Hierarchical Database: High Availability and Low Cost Per Transaction | ||||||||||||||||||||
IBM IMS Database - Moving Forward IBM’s IMS hierarchical database software still is being used for processing and managing volume transmittals of data. In the hierarchical IMS database, record schemas are arranged in a tree structure. As a result, data stores with this type of many-to-many relationship are much larger with IMS than DB2 and performance in typical database tasks will be slower. However, for important business applications that do not typically involve many-to-many relationships, IMS still can provide superior performance to relational databases. Accordingly, a number of mainframe applications from the 1960s and 1970s continue to use IMS. Although not its preferred database, IBM has updated IMS to be integrated with web enabled environments. IMS databases have primary and secondary indexes and are accessed with DL/1 calls from application programs. IMS on the mainframe can scale to support trillions of transaction per year. The major advantages associated with IMS for online operations and data are high availability, performance, capacity, and low cost per transaction. IBM has made improvements to TM: Transaction Manager and DB: Database Manager:
IBM supports IMS in order that advancements in hardware can be used to achieve improvements in price performance by leveraging an existing investment in applications and data. According to customer satisfaction surveys, organizational enterprise has been maintaining and developing new IMS applications. IBM reports that since 2008 the top 10 percent of IMS customers have significantly increased their IMS database processing.1 SYS-ED offers challenging "hands-on" IMS training for motivated programmers who are willing to work. Our 30 years experience as IMS consultants in systems programming, database administration, and application development provides us with a unique perspective and IBM mainframe systems software skillset to teach a new generation of information technology personnel. Our staff of system consultant instructors and CETi Technology Partners worked on several first generation IMS projects. It affords the privilege to explain and highlight why the software works or in some situations doesn’t work as advertised. That is why IBM and other software companies have used our instructors to teach their current generation of software developers. SYS-ED's training services are highly valued in maintaining existing IMS systems and integrating IMS with web enablement technologies. Students are welcome to ask the inevitable questions which come up back on the job. Our instructors specialize in addressing design issues and analyzing an existing investment in IMS database applications. Whether it's IMS Database Design, IMS DB DL/1 Application Programming, IMS DC and Message Format Services Programming, IMS Performance and Tuning, IMS Recovery and Restart or IMS Utilities, we encourage students to bring in the specifications of their own projects for discussion and analysis. We also teach the longstanding add-on products and third party utilities such as IMS File-AID, ADF-II, and IMS MTO. IBM's mainframe information technology service encompasses both
commercial and open source software. It's foundation is to simplify, collaborate, reuse, and standardize. SYS-ED's IMS course offerings, educational consultancy, training programs, and
websites have been designed to add value-added service to IBM's information agenda and cloud computing initiative:
SYS-ED's IMS courseware incorporates industry standard content and consultancy derived techniques for structured design, data modeling, coding, debugging, and optimization techniques. The principles of adult learning are applied to content, interpreting, and translating subject matter into performance objectives, narrative descriptions, and diagrams which explain the design, program logic and underlying architecture. The courseware has been designed to utilize a variety of presentation formats: textual, tabular, diagrammatic, bullet point, and code snippets. We review documented coding standards and then have the client select the examples, sample programs, and exercises from our courseware library. If necessary, we will create new ones and also provide skeleton programs. With the intermixing and hybrid implementations of open standards and IBM systems software, reference material, which explains and demonstrates is fundamental to an effective learning experience. Upon completion of a private instructor-led course at the client location, it is standard policy to organize content for future utilization in a web-based training infrastructure. |

The Computer Education Techniques courseware used in SYS-ED courses consists of student hand-outs, training aids, and industry-specific exercises. The CETi knowledge base aggregates and analyzes information in the public domain. It also is a service for reviewing and answering questions. Content is selectively added to courseware. The long-term strategy is to have our courseware recognized as a NRV: Nationally Recognized Vendor. |

| Over the past year, we have had inquiries regarding whether SYS-ED still offered IMS courses for IT professionals.
The typical comments were that: |
| 1. | It is extremely difficult to find IMS training which develops the specialized skills needed for application development and maintenance tasks. | |
| 2. | There is a scarcity of fast-track IMS courses, 5 or fewer days in duration, geared to Fortune 1000 corporations and their employees. | |
| 3. | A high percentage of IMS courses are cancelled. | |
| 4. | That travel costs and living expenses in a majority of situations are a significant constraint when it comes to attending a IMS course. | |
| 5. | That it is important to have a resource for asking IMS questions once the programming language course is complete. | |
In response to these questions: |
Yes, SYS-ED offers multiple levels of IMS training: IMS Fundamentals, IMS DB/DL/1 Application Programming, and tailored modules.
Yes, since 1980, SYS-ED has taught IMS programming and we offer fast-track IMS courses and tailored IMS training programs.
Yes, we have the flexibility and resources to conduct personalized training for small groups. We very rarely cancel IMS courses.
IMS courses are available in multiple formats: classroom, distance-learning and blended web-based delivery
Upon completion of a SYS-ED course, our staff is available to answer IMS questions.
SYS-ED has been conducting courses in the public domain since 1980; however, there have been changes in the laws and regulations governing computer training in the state of New York. The schedule on our websites reflects a projected time frame for licensure with the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision and submission and approval of curriculum. It will be updated quarterly. |
