DB2 for Data Mining and BI Application Development
Brought to market in 1983 by IBM for its MVS mainframe platform, contemporary DB2 is a multiplatform object-SQL Database Management System: z/OS, z/VSE, z/VM, UNIX, Linux, and MS Windows servers, iSeries, and IBM InfoSphere Warehouse editions. IBM has been promoting DB2 for its central role in its SOA: Service Oriented Architecture for updating and integrating existing investments in legacy programming languages and mainframe system software. To further advance this strategic agenda DB2 has been extended to accommodate open source software and third party databases. DB2 for z/OS has few direct competitors.
DB2 offers comprehensive API programming language support:
| IBM Mainframe | Client/Server Languages and Development Platforms 1 | FOSS: Free Open Source Software 2 | ||||||||||||
| COBOL | Fortran | PL/1 | REXX | RPG | C | C++ | Borland - Delphi | Microsoft CLI and .NET | Oracle - Java and WebLogic | Java | Perl | PHP | Python | Ruby |
Rational Developer for System z is the IBM development platform for modernizing existing assets and deploying new applications. Tools are providing which assist in the creation of relational databases: designing databases, managing schemas, and writing queries against local and remote data. Rational Developer for System z supports SQL: Structured Query Language, DB2 stored procedures, and integration of DB2 with XML.
Teaching DB2 and IBM's Smart Software
SYS-ED staff and CETi Technology Partners have been evaluating the IBM advertisements, DB2 UDB product announcements, trial software, and in-production code for developing courseware and teaching; 1- Standards-based capabilities for SOA: Service Oriented Architecture requirements. 2- SQLJ and JDBC support. 3- UNICODE support. and 4- WebSphere integration. Exercises and case studies have been added to our courseware library for provisioning and reconfiguring system resources and optimizing DB2 performance. Benchmarks and best practices are presented in conjunction with teaching planning and transitioning to extended infrastructures and a cloud computing delivery model.
DB2 Training - Performance
Objectives and Content Delivery
A predictable professional information technology training outcome requires an accurate recognition of a client's
performance and operational objectives and the appropriate extension of industry standard subject matter. It is
SYS-ED policy to provide code snippets, examples, and exercises which highlight efficient performance design and coding techniques. We refer to it as educational consultancy, more specifically it is working with the prospective client to identify and differentiate between a course -
DB2 UDB: Application Programming and
MS Windows.NET ASP.NET and ASP/DB2 Workshops and
DB2 UDB: Programming in Java with JDBC as compared to teaching and addressing operational requirements:
DB2 UDB: System/Disaster Recovery and
DB2 UDB: System Performance and Tuning with Data Warehousing.
| Industry Standard Content | Transition and Migration | Educational Consultancy |
| Teach the topics and skillsets designated by the source software company and have case studies and workshops which provide experience to perform specific tasks. | Apply the transitional releases of DB2 in relation to the client system software environment and other databases: Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, and MySQL. | Identify and teach subject matter which addresses client-specific operational objectives by incorporating client project specifications into the course lesson plan. |
This checklist provides a framework for executives, management, and project leaders to select the delivery medium and courseware specific to its operational requirements and budget.
Courseware for Teaching Computer Education Techniques courseware used in SYS-ED courses is designed for use in teaching and measuring mastery of DB2 UDB subject matter. It is highly valued in those areas of information technology where there is a scarcity of industry standard textbooks: IBM mainframe systems, open source software, and increasingly hybrid information technology. At the client discretion, CETi courseware can be used in conjunction with an industry standard text book, NRV curriculum, and source vendor documentation.
As part of presenting an instructor-led DB2 course at the client location, courseware is evaluated and organized for subsequent use in a web-based infrastructure and delivery medium. This service is provided free of charge. Why SYS-ED for DB2 Training Since the late 1980s, SYS-ED staff and CETi Technology Partners have been providing DB2 UDB consultancy services for Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, and healthcare providers: DB2 application programming, administration, system performance, and web enablement. This hands-on experience has served as a foundation for the compilation of our knowledge base and independent assessment of DB2 documentation which explains the architecture and underlying design of IBM DB2 Enterprise Server Edition and the development languages that DB2 was written in: PL/S for the mainframe, C++ for the server, and Starburst Optimizer for SQL cross platform SQL optimization.3 In conjunction with teaching DB2, we have authored DB2 text books and developed DB2 training aids. The DB2 courseware incorporates information from the CETi knowledge base inclusive of an interpretation of IBM manuals and red books. The CETi courseware has been developed based upon the standards mandated by the New York State Department of Education and designed for helping information technology professionals learn DB2. 4 Equally as important, we are longstanding experts in hybrid operating environments: 1- mainframe - z/OS, z/VSE, and z/VM, 2- UNIX - Solaris, Linux, 3- MS Windows and 4- MS.NET, and 5- programming languages - COBOL, Java, and 6- middleware - WebSphere MQ. This expertise provides a privileged perspective from which we explain nuances, challenge IBM guidelines, and much to IBMs chagrin, point out the glitches in DB2 UDB which do not work as advertised. Once the DB2 training has been completed, we invite client's to submit DB2 questions. And by the way we do get requests from major software and consulting companies to train their clients and staff. So when it comes to your DB2 UDB training needs, by all means contact IBM and review their course outlines, lesson plans, performance objectives, and courseware. Then e-mail us to schedule a complimentary consultation at dshapiro@sysed.com or dsilverberg@sysed.com or call 212-564-9147.
SYS-ED DB2 courses are not open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, healthcare providers, and consulting companies are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and only after a telephone consultation with our Director of Education. This is essential for ensuring that the individual be placed in the course which corresponds to the employers operational objectives, operating environment, version of DB2, and development platform. The search engine can be used for researching course titles and topics. SYS-ED has been conducting courses in the public domain since 1980; however, there have been changes in the laws and regulations governing computer training in the state of New York. The schedule on our websites reflects a projected time frame for licensure with the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision and submission and approval of curriculum. It will be updated quarterly. |

Enrollment is contingent upon the prospective trainee's having been qualified by our Director of Education to have the appropriate background for the training and review of a checklist of items required for transmission of the service to the client location: bandwidth, firewall, base operating system, software requirements, web browser, and set-up of hands-on machine exercises.
