IBM DB2 UDB: Delivering Temporal and Versioned Data
Ranked at or near the top of the industry benchmarks published on the Transaction Processing Performance Council's website, IBM has been repositioning the DB2 UDB relational database for more widespread utilization in its mainframe operating and alternative operating systems. IBM is competing with the Oracle Corporation database platform. DB2 9.7 includes support for the most commonly used SQL, PL/SQL, and scripting syntax from the Oracle database and supports additional data types and concurrency models. This has served to make it easier to run and migrate Oracle applications under DB2 UDB.
The strategy with DB2 UDB is to provide a minimal cost trial and migration path to IBM's commercial DB2 value-added software product line.
In 2009, IBM announced that DB2 can be an engine in the FOSS: Free Open Source MySQL database. This allows users on the System i platform to natively access DB2 and for users on other platforms to access these files through the MySQL interface. The featureset includes: 1- Reduced CPU utilization based upon a scalable workload. 2- Greater concurrency for data management, data definition, and data access, including DDL, BIND, REBIND, PREPARE, utilities, and SQL. 3- Flexibility in online changes for data definitions, utilities, and subsystems. 4- Security with better granularity for administrative privileges, data masking, and audit capabilities.
DB2 Express-C is available unsupported, free of charge, for unrestricted use in production environments. DB2 Express-C is based on the same code as other DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows editions; however it is not open source software. DB2 Express-C is similar to the free versions of Oracle database and Microsoft SQL Server, except that DB2 Express-C has no limit on number of users or on database size. DB2 Express-C runs on 32- and 64-bit Windows, Linux on x86, x64, and POWER processors, Solaris on x64 CPU and Intel machines running Mac OS X. The database engine will use only two CPU cores and 2GB of RAM. Support is provided on a free, public web forum. For this edition, there are no fixpacks or official support from IBM.
Integration with third party software also is being promoted. IBM has worked with SAP on DB2 10 for z/OS; SAP customers will be able to utilize DB2's scalability and performance enhancements to extend SAP applications and consolidate hardware upgrades.
DB2 Version 10
The DB2 database management information system provides the capability to deliver temporal and versioned data for driving the business models of organizational enterprise. Temporal data support is built-in to DB2; it is required for supporting data with a time-based component. Prior to DB2 version 10, developers had to code the logic into applications. DB2 can be instructed to automatically maintain a history of database changes and track effective business dates. This provides a consistent approach to tracking time-related events, and managing and maintaining versioned data. DB2 10 supports system time and business time. System time tracks when changes are made to the state of the table. Business time tracks effective dates of certain business conditions. Bitemporal tables track both system and business time in a single table; time periods can be added to indicate start and end points. In the short-run it is a feature not available on the Oracle Corporation database or any other competing RDBMS products.
DB2 10 for z/OS expands the value of the mainframe data server through: 1- Improved operational efficiencies for CPU savings. 2- Enhancements to XML and SQL for simplifying portability from other databases. 3- Rapid application and warehouse deployment for business growth. Administration can be performed from either the command-line or a GUI. The GUI is a multi-platform Java client that contains a variety of wizards. DB2 supports both SQL and XQuery. DB2 utilizes a native implementation of XML data storage which results in faster access using XQuery.
Significant changes have been made to QMF: Query Management Facility.

DB2 Training by SYS-ED
Few software or information technology consulting companies provide
a comparable DB2 UDB training service:
technology updates,
validation assessment,
training aids, and answering client questions. CETi Technology Partners have been working with DB2 since its initial release in the mid 1980s and have afforded us the opportunity to develop a
knowledge base.
This information has been utilized to review and analyze content in IBM manuals and red books, develop
courseware for teaching, and author industry standard DB2 text books:
application programming and
systems performance.
SYS-ED staff continue to evaluate the new DB2 releases and test the assumptions underlying IBM' s Smarter Planet advertising campaign; this information is then incorporated into our courseware library and industry specific case studies: energy, finance, healthcare, public education, and transportation. 1

SYS-ED is software company independent; it provides us with the benefit of impartiality in teaching how to integrate FOSS: Free Open Source Software with DB2 UDB and intelligently scale to a larger database. We interpret IBM guidelines, explain the nuances of the software, and provide best practices in a variety of enterprise configurations.
Equally as important, SYS-ED system consultants are recognized experts in 1- programming languages 2- mainframe utilities and development tools 3- WebSphere MQ. Given the hybrid base operating systems and web server environments that DB2 UDB operates under, z/OS, z/VM, MS Windows, AIX, Solaris, and Linux-variants, a properly designed and maintained database is directly dependent upon providing the client employee with a multi-functional skillset. Upon completion of a SYS-ED course, students are welcome to ask the inevitable questions back on the job.

SYS-ED DB2 courses are not open to the general public. Only employees sponsored by Fortune 1000 corporations, government municipalities, healthcare providers, consulting companies, and mid-sized businesses are allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED course and ONLY after a telephone consultation with our Director of Education. This is essential for ensuring that the employee be placed in the course which corresponds to the employers operational objectives, operating environment, version of DB2, and development platform.
Our DB2 curriculum includes includes 50+ courses, with the TC suffix indicating a course that was developed and taught in conjunction with consultancy assignments. Course titles and topics can be reviewed by typing DB2 in the search engine field.
SYS-ED has been conducting courses in the public domain since 1980; however, there have been changes in the laws and regulations governing computer training in the state of New York. The schedule on our websites reflects a projected time frame for licensure with the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision and submission and approval of curriculum. It will be updated quarterly.

Private Courses
SYS-ED conducts DB2 private training in North America and Europe.
Private training can be conducted in multiple delivery formats -
classroom, distance-learning,
or
blended web-based delivery format.
Contact our New York office for
additional information on the selection of content delivery. As part of presenting an instructor-led DB2 course at the client location, courseware is evaluated and organized for subsequent use in a web-based infrastructure and delivery medium.
With private courses, topics can be mixed and matched from multiple course outlines and the workshops tailored. Case in point; several of our fast-track clients have had us conduct accelerated 5-day courses consisting of what is regularly 8 days of subject matter. It is standard SYS-ED policy to incorporate client project specifications into the DB2 training.
