Why SYS-ED
for UNIX Training
Since the 1970's, UNIX has evolved to serve an increasingly important role as an
internetworking operating system, application development platform, base operating system for web servers, and as
a virtual
machines to IBM mainframe operating systems.
David Silverberg and David Shapiro were both among the first wave of
technologist and programmers who evaluated the UNIX operating system and
designed and coded C programs. Silverberg was coding programs and reviewing
source code and later taught classes both at Bell Laboratories and AT&T. Shapiro, in
conjunction with classmates at Union College and Cornell University, became
familiar with the capabilities and long term potential of low level programming
languages, and early versions of UNIX. SYS-ED's UNIX courses reflect
this
longstanding consultancy experience and multiplatform expertise with UNIX
and a comprehensive range of open source and proprietary software. Our
UNIX training melds industry standard content with a variety of real-world implementations of the
UNIX-variant operations systems which highlight the transitional and new featureset.
SYS-ED consultancy derived courses provide specialized expertise in
system administration, performance design, scripting, and application
development for Fortune 1000
companies, government municipalities, and health care providers. Few software or
consulting companies have been providing UNIX training services longer or
conducting better UNIX courses than SYS-ED.
UNIX Courseware
Industry experts agree that the documentation available for supporting open
source software and code does not provide a comparable degree of completeness in relation to
proprietary software. An important component in SYS-ED's delivery of UNIX training
has been
the development of UNIX courseware: student hand-outs, sample programs, skeleton
programs, workshops, and training aids. They were designed to help business
professionals,
webmasters, and programmers acquire specific skillsets and code and debug
application programs. The collective efforts of our subject matter experts are
managed by IT professionals who have multidisciplinary skillsets in information
technology, graduate degrees in computer science, management, business
administration, and authoring industry standard text books. The classic
principles of adult learning are applied to interpreting and
translating subject matter into performance objectives, narrative descriptions
and
diagrams which trace the design, architecture, and program logic to industry- and client-specific examples. The courseware
utilizes a variety of presentation formats: textual, tabular,
diagrammatic, bullet point, and code snippets. SYS-ED's courseware library has
been incrementally augmented, revised, and maintained. It is highly respected in
evolutionary information technology. For organization’s who have a requirement for
their own employees to teach UNIX subject matter or the need to
have content available for presentation through a
web-based learning medium, we will tailor and
license our courseware.
Knowledge Base and
Submit UNIX Questions
SYS-ED reviews information in the public domain distributed by
software companies,
international standards committees, and purveyors of open source
software. We perform our own independent analysis and assessments of
benchmarks for software updates and new products. Vendor documentation
and third party content is interpreted and selectively incorporated into
our courseware and training aids. SYS-ED clients are invited to submit
mainframe questions. Our system consultants and technology partners
answer,
explain, and where applicable reference source documentation.
Questions are reviewed and answered on a first-come/first serve-basis.
This service is available through our categorized and open source websites.
Educational Consultancy and
Value Added Service
SYS-ED recognizes and differentiates between industry standard content
and educational consulting. We review documented coding standards and
then have the client select the examples, sample programs, and exercises
from our courseware library. If necessary, we will create new ones and
also provide skeleton programs. At the client discretion,
assessment validation can be provided.
Consultation Prior to Accepting a Training Assignment or
Enrolling an Employee in a SYS-ED Course
It is standard operating procedure to schedule a telephone consultation with our
Director of Education or Curriculum Manager. As part of this process we will
review the subject matter, sample programs, workshops, and installation
standards and provide a written training plan. For organizations evaluating
whether to send an employee to a SYS-ED course, we will require that profile
form be submitted by both the manager sending the employee and the employee who
will be attending. It
is our prerogative to ensure that the employee has the prerequisite background
and is placed in the appropriate course. Not everyone is allowed to enroll in a
SYS-ED course.
New York State Department of Education - Bureau of
Proprietary School Supervision
In order to validate the quality of the body of our work, SYS-ED’s core UNIX
curriculum has been submitted to the New York State Department of
Education - Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision.
