Why SYS-ED
for Mainframe Training
When it comes to legacy
programming languages (COBOL,
Assembler Language,
PL/1,
FORTRAN, and
REXX),
evolutionary systems software (VSAM,
CICS,
and IMS,
DB2,
IDMS,
and
ADABAS)
and new technologies integrated with IBM mainframe systems (WebSphere
MQ), SYS-ED’s credentials in terms of consultancy experience and advanced
degrees
in many situations will be superior to that of the employees from the source software
companies.
Since 1980,
SYS-ED has been providing
instructor-led mainframe
courses and training services to and for
major software houses, consulting
firms, Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, and healthcare
providers. Few software or consulting organizations have the skilled personnel
or have been doing mainframe training longer or better than SYS-ED.
Mainframe Courseware
An
important component in the delivery of the training was the development of
mainframe courseware: student hand-outs, sample programs, skeleton
programs, workshops, and training aids. SYS-ED courseware incorporates industry standard content and
consultancy derived techniques for coding and debugging
applications written in legacy programming languages inclusive of performance
design and optimization with IBM system software. The collective efforts
of our subject matter experts, who average 30+ years experience in IBM mainframe
technology, are
managed by editors, who have multidisciplinary expertise
in information technology, text book authoring, and degrees in management and business administration. The classic principles of adult
learning are applied to the content, interpreting and translating subject matter
into performance objectives, narrative descriptions, and diagrams which explain the
design, program logic and underlying architecture. The courseware has been designed to
utilize a variety
of presentation formats: textual, tabular, diagrammatic, bullet point, and code
snippets. Our courseware library has been
incrementally augmented, revised, and maintained. It is highly
valued, especially with legacy mainframe programming languages, where there is a
scarcity of up to date text books. For organization’s who have a requirement for
their own employees to teach mainframe subject matter or the need to
have content available for presentation through a
web-based learning medium, we will tailor and
license our courseware.
Knowledge Base and
Submit Mainframe Questions
SYS-ED reviews information in the public domain distributed by
software companies,
international standards committees, and purveyors of open source
software. We perform our own independent analysis and assessments of
benchmarks for software updates and new products. Vendor documentation
and third party content is interpreted and selectively incorporated into
our courseware and training aids. SYS-ED clients are invited to submit
mainframe questions. Our system consultants and technology partners
answer,
explain, and where applicable reference source documentation.
Questions are reviewed and answered on a first-come/first serve-basis.
This service is available through our categorized and software specific
mainframe websites.
Educational Consultancy and
Value Added Service
SYS-ED recognizes and differentiates between industry standard content
and educational consulting. We review documented coding standards and
then have the client select the examples, sample programs, and exercises
from our courseware library. If necessary, we will create new ones and
also provide skeleton programs. At the client discretion,
assessment validation can be provided.
Consultation Prior to Accepting a Training Assignment or
Enrolling an Employee in a SYS-ED Course
It is standard operating procedure to schedule a telephone consultation with our
Director of Education or Curriculum Manager. As part of this process we will
review the subject matter, sample programs, workshops, and installation
standards and provide a training plan in writing. For organizations evaluating
whether to send an employee to a SYS-ED course, we will require that a profile
form be completed and submitted both by the manager and the employee who will be
trained. It
is our prerogative to ensure that the employee has the prerequisite background
for the training. Not everyone is allowed to enroll in a
SYS-ED course.
New York State Department of Education - Bureau of
Proprietary School Supervision
In order to validate the quality of our
work, SYS-ED’s core mainframe curriculum has been submitted for review
to the New York State Department of Education - Bureau of Proprietary School
Supervision.
