Mission Statement

Computer Education Techniques develops courseware and training aids for use in SYS-ED distance-learning, web-based training, classroom instruction, and courseware as a learning center. The courseware and premium training service has been developed in response to specific operational objectives and training requirements of Fortune 1000 companies, government municipalities, healthcare providers, consulting, software companies, and midsized and small businesses. The full complement of web-based and classroom technologies are used to provide effective knowledge transfer.

The long-term objective is to apply the classic principles of adult learning theory and knowledge transfer in order to meet the standards of the New York State Department of Education. The initial curriculum to be submitted are in areas where CETi has a longstanding and demonstrated expertise:

• Computer applications: Microsoft Office System, web applications, web design, HTML, JavaScript, and scripting
• Programming languages: COBOL, Assembler, REXX, PL/1, Fortran, C, and C++
• Mainframe programming skills: TSO/ISPF, z/OS, JCL: Job Control Language, z/VM CMS, and z/VSE/JCL
• Mainframe systems software: VSAM, CICS, DB2, IMS, and WebSphere MQ
• Open source software: Linux, UNIX, Java, and XML

Experience and Expertise

Computer Education Techniques, was formed in 1982 and purchased SYS-ED, the training services division of Integrated Computer Software. CETi’s collective experience with software engineering predates 1982. SYS-ED’s founder, Robert Blumfeld, did pioneering work with the initial releases of CICS, IBM's mainstay systems software, at the New York Times and his association with Ed Yourdon, a contemporary, resulted in a cross fertilization with the new techniques in structured analysis and design. In the 1970's, Mr. Blumfeld played a major role in the development and delivery of instructor-led training at On-line Software International and was co-founder of Verhoef Information Packages. Several CETi system consultants were involved in first generation coding and debugging of programming languages and IBM systems software. We have used each successive generation of software technology. And equally as important, categorized and developed content for effective teaching. Few software or consulting companies have the library of sample programs, exercises, and training aids that we do.

The by product of CETi work with these authors is typically derivative courseware and training aids which reflect the evolving nature of the software industry: co-existence and interoperability with established and new generations of software, updates, fixes and patches for software, and software as a service. The challenge is transforming this courseware slibrary into web-enabled distance- and e-learning services which help people learn in technology enabled training environments. Content will be in a digital format which is programmatically updated and distributed.

David Silverberg, a Director at SYS-ED, authored an acclaimed DB2 Systems Performance book as part of the Jay Ranade IBM Series, McGraw-Hill, Inc.

David Shapiro, a Director at SYS-ED, has developed and edited courseware for SYS-ED courses in conjunction with the following authors:

• Pacifico Lim, CICS, COBOL, DB2, and IBM systems software
• Shaku Atre, Atre International Consultants, ADABAS, DB2, IDMS, and IMS
• Andy Novick, Visual Basic, Structured Analysis and Design

Each also selectively accepts and develops courseware projects on their own.

Open Source Software

Computer Education Techniques staff has first generation experience with open source operating systems, web servers, and development languages. We are recognized experts with Linux- and UNIX- variants, web servers, XML, and Java, and development tools.

CETi courses teach industry standard content and consultancy derived techniques for:

• designing and programmatically managing XML data.
• Linux- and UNIX- variant configuration, internetworking, and administrative scripting.
• web server configuration, performance optimization, and programming.
• designing, coding, and debugging Java applications and using development tools.

Equally as important, we have specialized consultancy expertise with hybrid internetworking and development platforms.

Industry experts agree that the documentation available for supporting open source software does not provide an equivalent degree of clarity and completeness in relation to its proprietary counterparts. CETi courseware has been designed to address this shortcoming and provide value-added quality. It is being prepared for utilization in courseware as a learning center.

Computer Education Techniques avails itself of the software and related documentation available in the public domain. We analyze and interpret this information and develop our own examples and workshops. Based upon requests from our client base, we develop courseware and training aids. 

CETi has been called upon by major software companies to train both their clients and software engineers and software developers on their own software! 

Certification Standards

Computer Education Techniques keeps abreast of the latest releases of software and requires its consultants to pass vendor certification examinations. 

CETi Consulting

Computer Education Techniques selectively accepts consulting assignments. This affords us the opportunity to use the software and analyze and benchmark the assumptions in the source vendor documentation. Over the years, we have developed expertise in a variety of industries and applications. Each assignment typically uncovers errors and omissions in the vendor documentation and new and better ways of designing, developing, and coding systems.
