Educational Consultancy and Value Added Service
Our first generation and longstanding consultancy experience provides us with the privileged perspective from which to recognize and differentiate between industry standard content and educational consulting. We review coding standards and then have the client select the examples and sample programs for the hands-on exercises. It is our standard policy to examine client documentation and tailored create skeleton programs. At the client discretion, assessment validation can be provided. Equally as important, SYS-ED is independent from the software companies. We review software company manuals, red books, proprietary information in the public domain, and open source documentation. SYS-ED analyzes benchmarks for software updates and new products. Vendor documentation and third party content is interpreted and selectively incorporated into our courseware and training aids.

Knowledge Base
SYS-ED clients are welcome to submit programming languages questions. Our system consultants and technology partners answer, explain, and where applicable reference source documentation. Questions are reviewed and answered on a first-come/first serve-basis. This service is available through our categorized and software specific mainframe websites.

Client's Requirements

Assembler Programming
Our programmer's average more than twenty years experience with the Assembler language. We require hands-on Assembler training which extends the industry standard content and demonstrates:

  • how to code maintainable and reliable programs.
  • how to optimize code without sacrificing readability.
  • the use of macros to start and terminate programs.
  • how to perform arithmetic using binary and packed values.
  • the purpose, usage and need for linkage conventions.
  • the appropriate utilization of addressability issues.
  • the extended mnemonic instructions.

COBOL Programming
With the exception of one new staff member our programmer's average more than twenty-five years experience with the COBOL programming language.  Why do we want a COBOL course for them?  We want to emphasize quality of coding and efficient coding standards. The tailored course will need to include an:

  • emphasis on top down design.
  • paragraph naming standards (numbering them in sequential order).
  • communicative data names.
  • use of 88 levels.
  • use of appropriate comments.
  • a section to record program maintenance stating what was done, by whom, and one what date.

What SYS-ED has Delivered

Our cadre of system consultants have been coding Assembler and COBOL language programs since the late 1970's and average over 30 years experience with IBM mainframe system software.

SYS-ED's fast-track Assembler courses and educational consultancy teaches techniques which:

  • efficiently create and utilize CSECTs and DSECTs.
  • code and test QSAM macro instructions: OPEN, DCB, CLOSE, GET, PUT.
  • improve the debugging process by examining dumps: source dump or ABEND-AID dump.
  • pass arguments to a sub program and change the values in the parameters.
  • explain the purpose and use of 24-bit, 31-bit, and 64-bit addressing: AMODE and RMODE.
  • utilize Address constants (ACONs and VCONS), RLD - Relocation Dictionary, External symbols, and the ESD - External Symbols Dictionary.

SYS-ED's fast-track COBOL courses and integrated training program teach the next generation featureset of the COBOL programming language:

  • Internal SORT using input Procedure and Output Procedure.
  • VSAM files in COBOL programs: creation, maintenance, and utilization.
  • appropriate utilization of secondary indexes.
  • tables (both indexed and subscripted) - when and how to create and use each.

Consultancy Experience

Assembler COBOL
Update and expand a proprietary message-switching system.

Technology Exchange Websites

SYS-ED's technology exchange websites compile, organize, and present software specific and established operational categorizations of information technology. They provide a framework for assessing knowledge transfer: learning paths, traditional instructor-led classroom instruction, web-based training, courseware, training aids, and validation assessment.
