Cloud computing has evolved from concept to a practical working reality; however, there is no single uniform precise definition. The consensus is that the cloud computing model can streamline costs: fewer salaried personnel, reduced power consumption, and less technical support. There are still issues emerging which will need to be addressed regarding security and privacy in order to make the cloud secure.

IBM has been making the commitment to products and services which promote cloud computing to its enterprise computing customers.

Its initial cloud computing strategy has focused on:

1- The software development platform and testing.

2- Virtual desktop services, from Microsoft or open source alternatives, and transmitted to either a workstation or mobile device with screens and keyboards.

3- Business intelligence software that analyzes data for patterns of customer behavior and market trends.

These assessments review industry standard categorizations of software technology and where applicable the emerging trends in cloud computing.
