COBOL Technology Update

Coding and Running Enterprise COBOL in the SOA Environment

The THREAD compiler option allows a COBOL program to be run in multiples threads under batch, TSO, IMS or UNIX.

Enterprise COBOL and Java

Enterprise COBOL enables interoperability with Java components across distributed applications and provides the capability for the exchange and usage of data in standardized formats including XML and Unicode. It also integrates COBOL and web-based business processes in web services and Java applications.

SYS-ED workshops explain and demonstrate:

  • COBOL CALL statement for Language Environment services.
  • The underscore character (_) in user-defined words.
  • Enterprise COBOL support for Java interoperability with object oriented syntax.
  • CICS translator integration.
  • Enhanced XML and Unicode support.
    • The z/OS XML System Services parser and XML PARSE.
    • Processing of the XML namespaces and namespace prefixes with special registers and XML events.
  • The integrated DB2 coprocessor.
    • Support for new SQL data types and SQL syntax provided by DB2 V9.
  • Support for POSIX threads and signals.
  • Customizing compiler diagnostic messages.
  • Debug Tool enhancements.
